The judge ruled against the beekeepers and public interest advocates in their lawsuit — which was seeking to protect bees, and the rest of the environment, from unregulated damages that may be caused by the Environmental Protection Agency’s rather sloppy policies regarding seeds that are coated with certain insecticides that are known to kill bees in large numbers.

Andrew Kimbrell, Director of the Center for Food Safety, said, “It is astounding that a judge, EPA or anyone with any common sense would not regulate this type of toxic pesticide use, especially when the seed-coatings are so broadly applied and there is so much at risk. Study after study has shown that seeds coated with these chemicals are a major culprit in catastrophic bee-kills. Now more than ever our country’s beekeepers, environment and food system deserve protection from agrichemical interests, and it is EPA’s job to deliver it.”

Kimbrell’s lamenting of the ruling is easily understandable; we know neonics are harmful pesticides and yet, our bureaucratic government is doing nothing to stop the damage.

Neonics have been linked to record all-time highs of colony deaths, water pollution, and are known to pose risks to other valuable species, like birds.

Earlier this year, the federal government itself released a report admitting that neonics are harmful and have been causing catastrophic bee deaths across the country. The findings were part of the first scientific risk assessment to conducted on this type of insecticide and their affect on bee populations. Indeed, the government’s own report confirmed what many activists and beekeepers have been saying for years: neonics weaken, disorient and kill honeybees.

The analysis particularly highlighted the harmful nature of imidacloprid, showing that it clearly caused damage to beehives and honey production. The EPA itself confirmed that when bees are exposed to imidacloprid at concentrations of at least 25 parts per billion — a pretty standard amount on crops — they suffer grieviously.

“These effects include decreases in pollinators as well as less honey produced,” the EPA’s press release states.

The report on imidacloprid is very concerning — but what is perhaps even more concerning is the fact that this report focused on just one, singular neonictonoid, when there are in fact several used nation-wide. It is not just one form of this insecticide that has been indicated as harmful — it is the entire class of neonics that many have found to be problematic.

What is most concerning about seed coatings containing neonics is that they are not exactly regulated  well. The group of beekeepers who filed suit against the EPA did so for this exact reason. Seed coating is the most prolific form of neonic use — and yet the EPA has never conducted safety testing on this use.  Toxic dust floats in the air every spring after corn is planted, thanks to neonic seed coatings, and it is this dust that is what is often most problematic.

Beekeeper Brett Adee lost more than 6,000 hives last spring during corn planting. A state investigation concluded that his bees were poisoned by a neonic that was used on the seeds his neighbors had planted. Mr. Adee is not the first beekeeper to lose his bees to insecticides, and he surely won’t be the last — given that the EPA has exempted seed coating from regulation.

When dismissing the case filed by beekeepers and advocates, the judge proclaimed, “The Court is most sympathetic to the plight of our bee population and beekeepers. Perhaps the EPA should have done more to protect them, but such policy decisions are for the agency to make.”

Monsanto propaganda holds that GMOs have been proven safe, but the truth is that few real safety studies have ever been conducted, while much of the existing scientific literature on the subject is bogus industry-backed drivel. However, despite Monsanto’s efforts to control the narrative, independent researchers have been finding evidence that contradicts the company’s claims.

GM Watch recently published the results of one such study, conducted by two researchers at the Faculty of Medicine at Tanta University, Egypt.

Researchers find ‘alarming signs’

The rats which were fed the GM corn (MON810: Ajeeb YG) developed “serious damage to the surface mucous membranes of the jejunum (part of the small intestine).”

“In the GM-fed rats, some areas of the villi – finger-like structures in the intestine that absorb nutrients from food – were damaged. They were distorted and flattened, with some cells joined together. The damage can clearly be seen in the images included in the study. The crypts (mucosal glands) were disrupted and blood vessels were congested. Signs of inflammation – white blood cell infiltration – were seen around areas of damage. In addition, the cells of the intestinal lining were abnormal in structure.

“Other signs of damage included increased shedding of mucosal cells, increased numbers of mucous-secreting goblet cells, and higher rates of division of cells lining the crypts.”

The researchers concluded that despite Monsanto’s assurances, the consumption of GM corn “profoundly altered the histological structure of the jejunal mucosa at many levels and revealed several alarming signs.”

Two earlier Egyptian studies involving rats that consumed the same Monsanto GM variety corn revealed other types of damage. One of the studies found “differences in organ and body weights and in blood biochemistry” between rats that consumed MON810: Ajeeb YG and those which ate a non-GM version of the same variety, suggesting that the GM corn might produce “potential adverse health/toxic effects.”

The second study, conducted by the same research team, found “toxic effects” in several organs of lab rats caused by the same GM variety – including damage to the liver, kidneys, intestines and testes.

The publication of the study comes as the European Commission pushes plans to begin growing MON810 corn in 2017. A vote is scheduled for January 17.

Monsanto GM corn strain poses genetic contamination risk

Interestingly, there appears to be another problem with MON810. Independent nonprofit research institute Test Biotech has reported that MON810 poses a risk of GM transgenes spreading to other plant species, and is calling for a withdrawal of Monsanto’s application to the EU for approval of its cultivation.

It’s become increasingly evident that GM technology has turned out to be – as many predicted – a dangerous experiment gone completely awry. GM crops have failed to produce the promised yields, while more and more studies are uncovering health risks associated with the technology.

Glyphosate, the main ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup – an herbicide essential to the whole Monsanto biotech equation – is a highly toxic and carcinogenic chemical. Glyphosate has now become the most widely used herbicide in history, and roughly 19 percent of all glyphosate produced since it was first introduced in 1974 has been dumped on the United States alone. But it could be the country is trying to clean up its act somewhat.

As reported by the Financial Times, agriculture authorities in the largest grain-producing province in China have implemented a five-year ban on genetically modified crops, which is a blow to the central government’s efforts to transform the country into a global GMO-producing powerhouse.

Even though the central government has spent billions of dollars on food biotechnology, Beijing currently does not allow the cultivation of any GMO crops with the exception of cotton and papaya, due to extreme suspicion and scrutiny from consumers over the perceived health risks.

The five-year ban, which was recently announced by officials in China’s northeastern Heilongjiang province, begins in May and applies to staple crops like rice, corn and soybeans.

China wants to become a global GMO power

“The black soil of Heilongjiang and its biodiversity needs special protection,” state-run China News Service reported, citing provincial officials.

The decision comes following plans published by the central government in August in which Beijing said it would begin to develop specific GMO crops that included corn and soybeans for the very first time. That announcement followed President Xi Jinping’s call for his country to “dominate high points of GMO techniques” that he mentioned during a speech released in 2014.

The $44 billion bid by Chemchina for Switzerland’s Syngenta, a GMO giant, is also being viewed as an attempt to bolster China’s global GMO prowess, despite the fact that in the U.S. and throughout Europe opposition to genetically-modified crops has been steadily increasing for years.

The five-year ban was prompted by a survey of the people which showed that more than 90 percent of respondents in the Heilongjiang province objected to the growing of GMO crops, the official Xinhua news agency reported. In addition, the ban follows a report by the global environmental organization Greenpeace earlier this year, which found there was rampant and widespread illegal use of GMO crops among agricultural operations in neighboring Liaoning province.

“Consumers in China, having experienced a litany of food scandals, are understandably distrustful of regulation round food and agriculture, and this extends to a distrust of genetically modified foods,” Sam Geall, a research fellow at the University of Sussex’s Science Policy Research Unit, told FT.

Other experts told Chinese state media that the ban was in direct conflict with the central government’s efforts to become a global GMO producer.

No doubt anti-GMO activists will seek to make the ban permanent, and nationwide

“The local government lacks foresight as it has rejected any possibility of developing GM technologies in China,” said Lu Baorong, a biology professor at Fudan University in Shanghai, in an interview with the Global Times newspaper.

However, Elrand Ek, an agricultural researcher at China Policy, a think tank based in Beijing, said that the five-year ban is important because it can be used as a tool for the central government to gain the public’s trust regarding any future moves to expand GMO crop development and production. Also, the Heilongjiang decision is important “because they would like to protect [the province’s] advantage as a producer of non-GMO soybean for the domestic and international market.

Currently China does allow for the importation of GMO soybeans, but only for use in animal feed. Ek said the ban is mostly about the protection of local produce and gaining a “comparable advantage” in response to the increase in GMO imports from the United States and other countries.

Still, there will be some agricultural and environmental experts who will no doubt be pushing to make the ban permanent and, perhaps, spread it to all of China, as it should be.

That is the goal of GMO and the end result of manipulating the genetic structure of corn; however, the end result for animals that eat it, including rats and humans, is vital organ failure. It’s a double dose of toxins that cause severe allergies and cell mutations.

NK603 substantially altered and nowhere near “equivalent” to non-GMO corn

The findings of the Frankencorn study reveal over 100 proteins and more than 90 small molecule biochemicals (metabolites) were discovered to be “statistically significantly altered” in NK603 corn during the genetic modification transformation process. These metabolic profiles were altered in the lab, not in the field when sprayed with Roundup, according to the scientists. The alterations reveal a protein profile that reflects an imbalance of energy utilization and oxidative stress, meaning damage to cells and tissues by reactive oxygen. In other words, biotech scientists have created corn that now inherently contains “markedly increased” toxic compounds (polyamines, putrescine, and cadaverine), before ever even being sprayed with toxic herbicides or noxious pesticides.

General disturbances in GMO plants call for extreme caution regarding consumption

Furthermore, the genetic modification transformation process causes what the scientists have described as a “general disturbance in the GMO plant.” Profiles of the corn kernels revealed alterations in the levels of enzymes, reflecting imbalances in energy metabolism.

Even the approval process for glyphosate herbicide was massively disputed because it is usually mixed with additives and co-formulants that make it way more toxic than glyphosate alone. CRISPR and associated “gene editing” technologies have come under fire for many of the same reasons as traditional genetic engineering, but now Dr. Jim Kozubek has raised a new concern: CRISPR may actually enable doctors to eliminate certain neurological and psychiatric “diseases” that have actually been the key to producing many of humanity’s great minds throughout history.

Kozubek is author of Modern Prometheus: Editing the Human Genome with Crispr-Cas9.

Can mental “illness” be a gift?

CRISPR is short for CRISPR/cas9, itself an abbreviation for Clustered Regularly-Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats/CRISPR associated protein 9. The technique works by using a special RNA strand to guide a DNA-splicing protein to a particular site on the genome. It can be paired with other techniques to insert new DNA into the site where the old code has been removed.

Scientists are already investigating ways to use CRISPR to eliminate various human diseases.

“Before we begin modifying our genes with gene editing tools such as Crispr-Cas9, we’d be smart to recall that genetic variants that contribute to psychiatric conditions may even be beneficial depending on the environment or genetic background,” Kozubek said.

For example, Kozubek noted, the rate of bipolar disorder is 10 times higher among writers than among the general population, and 40 times higher among poets.

“Thomas Edison was ‘addled’ and kicked out of school. Tennessee Williams, as a teenager on the boulevards of Paris felt afraid of ‘the process of thought’ and came within ‘a hairsbreadth of going quite mad,'” Kozubek said.

According to Kozubek, the idea of editing “genetic disease” out of the human population reflects a poor understanding of evolution.

“Scientists tend to think of variations in life as problems to be solved, deviations and abnormalities outside of a normal curve,” he said.

“In reality, Darwin showed us that evolution does not progress toward an ideal concept or model, but rather is a work of tinkering toward adaptation in local niches.”

Science rushes recklessly ahead

Kozubek’s comments come in the context of the United States and China both having announced the world’s first clinical trials on CRISPR in humans, with the United Kingdom expected to follow close behind.

In the Chinese trial, already underway, a man was injected with immune cells that had been taken from his body and modified, with CRISPR, to attack his lung cancer. The team plans to perform the same intervention on another nine people, and monitor them for six months. This will be followed by other Chinese trials on CRISPR-modified treatments for bladder, prostate and kidney cancers.

In the United States, the trials are focused less on the effectiveness of CRISPR cancer treatments and more on their safety. Human participants will be injected with immune cells taken from their body and then modified to seek and destroy cancer cells, hide from cancer cells that will destroy them. Another edit is intended to prevent other immune cells from interfering with the process.

Critics have warned that contrary to the promises of the biotech industry, CRISPR editing has a very high error and mutation rate, and does not confer particularly precise control over the biological outcomes of the gene “editing.”

Another major danger posed by the ease of CRISPR editing is the allure of making modifications to human sperm, eggs or embryos. These “germline” modifications are able to affect every organ in the body and can be passed on to future generations — making their overall effects nearly impossible to know ahead of time.

Coordinated effort with military backup

Section 2 of the EO states that the “Council” will include personnel from a multitude of federal government agencies, including the Departments of State, Defense, Justice, Agriculture, Health and Human Services, and Homeland Security, as well as the Environmental Protection Agency and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Department of Defense (DOD) may “facilitate implementation and coordination of Department of Defense programs to further the GHSA, as well as provide technical expertise to measure and evaluate progress in countries the United States has made a commitment to assist.” In other words, the military will enforce this EO if deemed necessary.

Connection to GMOs

How does this tie in with GMOs? The government claims that farm animals are supposedly infected (but typically are not) and must be slaughtered to make way for their “vastly upgraded” counterparts, which are genetically engineered and thus patented and owned by global organizations. The public receives a fear-based agenda riddled with hysteria over disease threats, and they respond to that by willingly going along with the GMO agenda. It’s a convenient agenda for the powers that be, as it allows them to maintain tight control of the food supply while attempting to obliterate small and organic farms.

Unrealistic aims and better alternatives

The EO is titled “Advancing the Global Health Security Agenda to Achieve a World Safe and Secure from Infectious Disease Threats,” but achieving a world like that is unrealistic.  Infectious disease threats have always existed on this planet. The title implies a fear of infections, which is portrayed in the popular music video Vaccine Zombie by Mike Adams. As the lyrics say, “I’m afraid of invisible germs … .” Rather than promoting GMOs and toxic initiatives to address infectious disease concerns, a more effective approach involves educating people to lead healthy lifestyles through nutrition and other immune system-fortifying natural strategies.

Don’t be fooled by the impressive- and altruistic-sounding title of this EO. Spread the word about GMO dangers by working to inform family and friends through intelligent conversations and the sharing of relevant online content. In fact, the country’s biggest province in terms of grain production, Heilongjiang, has announced a five-year ban on the growing, processing and selling of GM crops, even as the central government positions itself to turn the country into a GMO superpower.

The cultivation of GMO crops is not currently allowed in China, with an exception being made for papaya and cotton. GMO soybeans can be imported for animal feed use. However, the ban comes after Beijing announced plans to start developing GMO crops like corn and soybeans as the president called for China to “dominate the high points of GMO techniques.” The Heilongjiang ban will apply not only to soybeans and corn but also rice.

China and Monsanto have a lot in common

It shouldn’t be too surprising that China aspires to become more like one of the world’s most evil corporations, Monsanto. After all, they have a lot in common, particularly their disregard for human health. Monsanto has known for at least 35 years about the link between the main ingredient in its Roundup weed killer, glyphosate, and cancer in humans – they just don’t seem to care. The World Health Organization classifies it as a “probable” carcinogen, which is bad enough, but there is enough evidence that many scientists believe it is a clear carcinogen.

China has a similar fondness for putting profits over people’s well-being. When levels of lead, a toxic heavy metal, in China’s water supply were recently found to be 700 times the national limit, residents in the affected town of Jixi reported that officials take extreme measures to protect the graphite mining firms and look the other way when they contaminate the water and air because it is so lucrative. If they don’t care about clean water and air, it makes perfect sense that GMO crops wouldn’t bother them, either.

Court documents: SNOPES CEO embezzled $98,000 to hire prostitutes

In addition to marrying an escort service tease, David Mikkelson thinks he should be paid $720,000 a year to run the SNOPES left-wing propaganda website. Via the UK Daily Mail:

David wanted his salary raised from $240,000 to $360,000 – arguing that this would still put him below the ‘industry standards’ and that he should be paid up to $720,000 a year.

‘As I said, based on industry standards and our revenues, my salary should be about 2x to 3x what it is now,’ he wrote in an email to Barbara in April 2016. ‘I’ll settle for $360K with the understanding that it’s to be retroactive to the start of the year.’

Banging whores with “sweet liberal shill money”

“According to divorce papers, Snopes co-founder David Mikkelson started taking all sorts of trips around the world to bang whores after that sweet liberal shill money started rolling in,” reports Zero Hedge.

“While engaging in this debauchery, Mikkelson wrote off just about everything as a business expense, embezzling a reported $98,000. The Snopes co-founder has since settled down and married a [NSFW] part time porn actress, Snopes.com administrator (spicy!), and sex worker. As in, she has a website devoted to being a whore.”

Lying for the left also turns out to be incredibly profitable. “David kept their joint baseball card collection, a savings account with $1.59 million balance, and other savings worth more than $300,000,” reports the paper.

David’s expression almost seems to say, “What I really wanted was some VIP pu##y and all I got was this obese creature annoying the hell out of me… plus a cat!”

SNOPES CEO Mikkelson’s new wife, Elyssa Young, has been banged by so many other paying customers that you can actually find online reviews for her “services.”

This particular review states that she “travels overseas extensively” and is a great choice “if you seek a lover.”

Hiring and marrying actual whores to “services” the presstitutes in the fakestream media is all part of SNOPES’ “diversity” program, according to the CEO. “Our editorial staff is drawn from diverse backgrounds,” Mikkelson told the UK Daily Mail.

If he means diversity in sexually transmitted diseases, he’s probably right. Can you imagine the vast array of viral populations festering in the crotches of these despicable “fact-checking” sleazebags?

Another SNOPES fact-checker turns out to be a pot-smoking fetish gear sex blogger who thinks Republicans fear females

The bizarre, twisted “diversity” of SNOPES’ staff doesn’t end there. Another SNOPES “fact-checker” named Kim LaCapria is a fetish gear sex blogger, according to Breitbart.com:

Writing under the pseudonym Vice Vixen, Snopes fact-checker Kim LaCapria regularly wrote about sex and fetish gear on her own blog, which was described as a lifestyle blog “with a specific focus on naughtiness, sin, carnal pursuits, and general hedonism and bonne vivante-ery.” LaCapria’s blog often featured reviews of sex toys. One particular review reads, “If you are doing something to your fella, and you apply this to the base of his cash-and-prizes while you carry on, he will scream and perhaps cry.” On another blog, LaCapria once described what she did on her day off, writing that she “played scrabble, smoked pot, and posted to Snopes.” She then added, “That’s what I did on my day ‘on,’ too.”

Snopes “fact-checker” Kim LaCapria claimed on her personal blog that she has “posted to Snopes” after smoking marijuana. As TheDC previously revealed, LaCapria describes herself as “openly left-leaning” and once claimed that Republicans fear “female agency.”

Official “fact-checkers” turn out to be steeped in debauchery, betrayal and deviant behavior

What’s astonishing in all this is how Facebook has already announced it will rely on SNOPES to “fact-check” news articles. Because SNOPES has long been run by left-leaning liberal propagandists, everyone knows Facebook’s “fact-checking” is really just a new form of censorship to silence independent journalism.

The fact that left-wing propagandists also happen to be actual whores, and men who marry whores, and people who reportedly embezzle money to hire whores is no surprise to anyone. The political left has descended into cabal of liars, thieves, asshats and intolerant, abusive hate-mongers who have been widely rejected by most of civil society. Revelations about SNOPES only further confirm what we’ve all known about the opinion leaders on the left for quite some time: They’re mostly sick, twisted, mentally ill sociopaths who have no ethics, no morals and no dedication to actual truth. They lie when it’s convenient; they stab each other in the back (feel the Bern!); they have weird sex fetishes (Bill Clinton’s numerous sex assaults on women); they routinely cheat on each other (Bill Clinton is not Chelsea Clinton’s father); and they LIE, LIE, LIE while proclaiming that have a divine monopoly on “truth.”

That Mark Zuckerberg would appoint these people to “fact-check” Facebook news just makes Zuckerberg a sicko and a psycho. In doing so, he’s in good company with other globalist psychopaths like Jeff Bezos, George Soros, Bill Gates and Ted Turner. Other small-time propagandists who operate with a similar degree of fraud and deception include:

– Jimmy Wales, the founder of Wikipedia who launched the propaganda venture using money earned from being a porn king.

– Jon Entine, a biotech industry propagandist who was exposed by Natural News for being a violent psychopath who physically attacked his wife in front of their own child.

– James “the Amazing” Randi, who was caught on tape soliciting sex acts from young men.

James Randi, in turn, leads to David Gorski, the discredited “skeptics” blogger and cancer surgeon who has been reported to the FBI for a series of allegations involving the same cancer center where now-imprisoned cancer surgeon Dr. Farid Fata committed widespread criminal fraud by falsely diagnosing patients with cancer so he could profit from “treating” them.

All these people are leftists. What they have in common is their complete abandonment of truth, ethics and morality in their psychopathic quest for power. They are all willing to lie, cheat, steal, defame, slander or, in some cases, even murder people in order to get their way.

Oh wait, let me guess: SNOPES is going to investigate these accusations against SNOPES and proclaim that everything in this story is false. Therefore, all criticism of SNOPES is “fake news” by definition, because the authenticity of the monopolistic arbiter of news can never be questioned, you see.

As reported by Business Insider, the social media site says it will begin fact-checking, labeling and then burying so-called “fake news” and hoaxes, after executives say the company was heavily criticized for its role in “spreading a deluge of political misinformation” during the recent U.S. presidential election.

Facebook, in other words, plans to make official the censorship of non-conformist, truth-filled news reporting that it was caught doing in the months before the election. In an interview with Gizmodo, former Facebook news curators revealed that so-called “conservative” news and reporting was purposely suppressed in favor of far-Left sites that were actually reporting fake news.

Censorship now official at Facebook

“Depending on who was on shift, things would be blacklisted or trending,” one of the former curators told the site. “I believe it had a chilling effect on conservative news.”

Censorship tends to do that – have a “chilling effect” on whatever angle of a story is being intentionally suppressed. Now Facebook wants to make it formal policy.

According to Business Insider, this is how the new Facebook censorship program will work: The company has teamed up with a “shortlist of media organizations” that include ABC News and Snopes, part of an “international fact-checking network” that is led by Poynter, a nonprofit journalism school in St. Petersburg, Fla. Once third-party fact-checkers have determined that a story is “fake,” it will be labeled and then buried in the news feed. Officials told Business Insider that the social site will also use algorithms to determine whether a story that has been deemed to be phony is going viral.

“We’ve focused our efforts on the worst of the worst, on the clear hoaxes spread by spammers for their own gain, and on engaging both our community and third party organizations,” Facebook News Feed chief Adam Mosseri said in a company blog post.

Fine. As a news organization ourselves, we applaud efforts to root out phony news stories and fraudulent reporting. The problem here is that Facebook, led by a lockstep Leftist in Mark Zuckerberg, isn’t interested in making sure that only genuine news makes it to the valued news feed; he is interested in suppressing divergent opinions and inconvenient facts, especially when they are being reported by news organizations that do not fall in line with the corporate or liberal narratives.

We should start calling it ‘Fakebook’

So does this mean that Facebook will soon weed out and bury fake, discredited stories from the Washington Post claiming that Russia hacked the U.S. elections in order to sway voters away from Hillary Clinton to support Donald Trump?

Or perhaps the New York Times, which has reported that U.S. spy agencies have a “consensus” about this? That’s fake, because the intelligence community has no consensus on this, and in fact, intel chiefs have distanced themselves from a CIA claim that the hacking occurred. In fact, an NSA whistleblower says the Russia hacking narrative is bogus because “hard evidence points to an inside leak” instead.

What about the nefarious claim by CNN that the Chinese recently took a U.S. undersea research drone because President-elect Trump took a congratulatory phone call from the president of Taiwan – a claim made with absolutely no evidence whatsoever?

Or how about stories that ABC News fakes? And Snopes, which has a clear Left-wing bias?

Or stories promoting GMOs, when in fact they are harmful and damaging to our food chain?

There definitely is a cottage industry of click-bait phony news on the Internet, no question about it. But the so-called “mainstream media” is most guilty of spreading false stories and political hack attacks disguised as “news.” And yet those are the sources of “news” that Facebook will increasingly rely on in the coming months and years.

Maybe we should begin calling the social media site “Fakebook,” because its news feed will be full of it.

“The team’s research challenges the previously held belief that neonicotinoid seed coatings have little to no effect on predatory insect populations,” ScienceDaily summarized.

The findings suggest that more work needs to be done to “work the bugs out,” as it were.

As Natural News has outlined, seeds are coated with neonicotinoids before planting instead of being sprayed on growing crops. Thus, a plant absorbs the entire insecticide component.

The seven different chemicals that make up the neonicotinoid family are reportedly known to be extremely toxic to the environment despite being promoted as a safer alternative to traditional pyrethroid pesticides.

The “dysfunctional” family includes acetamiprid, clothianidin, imidacloprid, nitenpyram, nithiazine, thiacloprid, and thiamethoxam.

Resembling nicotine, neonicotinoids exert an impact on the central nervous systems of insects and are sometimes called neonics for short. They are commonly deployed for crops such as corn, soybeans, and cotton.

In 2013, the European Union imposed a temporary, multi-year ban on neonicotinoids out of concerns for the harm to the bee population through nectar and pollen. Earlier this year, Maryland became the first state to ban neonicotinoids, as of  January 1, 2018, while the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency launched a review project that is due to report its findings in 2018.

In 2014, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on an incremental basis ended its use of neonicotinoids because of concerns over the global decline in pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

In the newly published Penn State study, researchers performed a statistical meta-analysis of about 1000 observations from 20 field studies in North America and Europe that evaluated the effect of neonicotinoids on predatory insects.

The results suggest that neonicotinoids may have a disruptive effect ecosystem, explained co-author Margaret R. Douglas. “Predatory insects contribute billions of dollars a year to agriculture through the elimination of crop pest insects. We have found that neonicotinoid seed coatings reduce populations of these natural enemies 10 to 20 percent.”

“This result suggests that neonicotinoids are reducing populations of natural enemies at least partly through their toxic effects rather than simply by reducing the availability of their crop pest foods,” she added.

As published in the PeerJ journal, the researchers wrote that “Our finding that insects were more strongly affected by seed-applied neonicotinoids than were non-insect groups (mainly spiders and mites) suggests that toxin exposure is at least partly responsible for the overall negative effect we observed, and raises the question of how insect natural enemies are being exposed to these seed-applied toxins.”

The study seemed to suggest that neonicotinoids and pyrethroids had about the same effect on native predators, but that more research is necessary in this area.

Co-author John F. Tooker proposed that farmers adopt an integrated pest management strategy that takes a combination of techniques into consideration, with insecticides possibly included as an option, depending on the circumstances.

“The researchers note that their results may help farmers and pest management professionals better weigh the costs and benefits of neonicotinoid seed treatments versus alternatives,” Science Daily explained.

IPM “is the best chance we have of conserving beneficial insect species while maintaining productivity in our agricultural systems,” the professor noted.

In a prior study published in 2014, the same researchers similarly concluded that neonicotinoids may reduce crop yields by wiping out native predators of crop pests.

Some 800 scientific studies previously reached the conclusion that neonicotinoids pose an ominous DDT-like threat to wildlife and the ecosystem. Plants treated with neonicotinoids have also been shown to poison birds and fish in addition to insects.
